March is National Nutrition month! It is a campaign that focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The focus is on making healthy choices, practice cooking at home, find activities and get physical, and only eating as much as one’s body needs.

I encourage all of you to get involved with National Nutrition Month with your kids. Teaching them healthy eating habits and how to enjoy their food will help nurture their bodies and souls.

Tips for getting your kids involved in National Nutrition Month

  1. Donate to a locate food pantry. Call and ask your local food pantry what items they need most. Low Country Food Bank is a great place to begin.
  2. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or low country food bank. They always need help sorting food items, preparing, and serving meals.
  3. Aim to eat more meals at the dinner table, instead of the living room. Ideally, together as a family!
  4. Put phones down and turn the television off at meal time. Focus on the good food and good company.
  5. Try a new healthy food item each week during March. Now’s the perfect time to try something fun in the kitchen. Experiment with ideas like “Meatless Monday” or “Fishy Friday”.
  6. Visit a local Farmers’ Market. Getting to know your farmers is so important.  Find local farmer’s markets here.
  7. Research a Community Supported Agriculture in your area and look into joining! It’s a great way to support local farmer’s and get fresh fruits and vegetables on a consistent basis.
  8. Have a healthy recipe contest at your workplace. Be sure to bring copies of your recipe to swap with coworkers!
  9. Have your kids help you “sneak” veggies into dad/grandparents food.  Get your kids involved in the secret while teaching them the importance of veggies.
  10. Drink more water. Swap out 1-2 sugary drinks with some ice water flavored with fresh fruit.  Ideally cut out all sugary drinks!
  11. Do some self-care and try a new fitness routine. Try a workout class online, at the gym, or just hit the local park for your steps. Or dance around your house! Whatever you do, make sure it is something you enjoy!

All year long we should all focus on our healthy nutrition, but having a month dedicated to nutrition is a perfect and fun excuse to get the whole family on board with eating and living well.
