It’s Children’s Book Week! Whether you’re looking to add to your own collection or want to pick out a book for a mom or mom-to-be, there’s an endless list of classics, new books, and even some odd-balls out there to choose from.
In the spirit of celebrating Children’s Book Week, I’ve included a list of books that I love, my son loves, and/or have been gifted to friends and family.
1.The Giving Tree
This is hands-down, MY absolute favorite children’s book. If you’ve had a shower with a book wishing well and I was invited, you can bet that this was the book I selected to add to your collection. This classic by Shel Silverstein shares the relationship between a young boy (who grows to an old man) and a tree. Whether this books shares a positive or negative message as far as the relationship between the boy and tree goes, can be a polarizing topic – but it’s a great story that leaves a little left up to interpretation.
2. Love You Forever
This book was introduced to me by my cousin when I was pregnant. ***Tissue Alert*** Raging hormones will only make it harder for you to get through this. I was warned by my cousin when she gave it to me that she still can’t get through it without crying, and I thought, “Oh come on, how ‘bad’ can it be?” Well, after my shower, I opened it up and read it in my son’s nursery, and I was a total mess. Also – I tried reading it to my son when he was about a month old, and I was sobbing before I got half way through page two. It’s a sweet story but definitely a tear-jerker!!
3. Goodnight Charleston
A quick read with a local spin, this book runs through some of the key landmarks of Charleston. This is part of a series of books that features different cities in the U.S. So great that Charleston was included in the mix! A great gift for locals and visitors alike!
4. Snuggle Puppy
I received this book as a gift, and it instantly became a favorite to read to my son. It’s a song; it’s a book – I’m no Mariah Carey, but I have a blast hitting the high notes when singing “OOOOOOO snuggle puppy of mine…” Not quite sure how my son feels about those high notes just yet 🙂
5. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
A Dr. Seuss classic, this is a truly fun book to read. I’ll be honest, aside from Green Eggs and Ham and The Grinch, I didn’t have a whole lot of exposure to Dr. Seuss books growing up. I read this aloud to my son for the first time, and I was like, “Hey, let’s read this guy again; this is fun.” I was also on maternity leave and had probably two hours of sleep, so anything would have been entertaining to me at that point. Nevertheless, I enjoy this book even when I’m relatively well-rested!
There is no shortage of children’s books out there – what are some of your favorites?
