Back to School Picks {Clothes, Shoes, & Accessories}

1

We are so fortunate in Charleston to have many local stores to choose from to outfit our kids. I personally think shopping for children is more fun than shopping for myself. Elizabeth (my almost three-year-old) has more clothes than I do! And lucky for us in South Carolina, Tax-Free Weekend is August 7-9.

Here are my Must Have Fall Picks for both boys and girls:

Charleston Krewe

SAMSUNG CSC
Kids’ club belts; $38

Nothing says “Charleston” or “Lowcountry” more than these kids’ club belts.

Choose from prints in Rainbow Row, Shrimp & Grits and Lighthouse.

Wonder Works

Wonder Works first opened when I was a “tween” and now has multiple locations in the Lowcountry.

Dress up that backpack with backpack clips that children can collect. (My daughter has Ty’s Beanie Clip kitty cat, Pepper, on her school bag to make it easier to identify). Whether they are Ty’s Beanie Clips, DKE’s new Throwbaby clips in Emoji images, or Whiffer Sniffers Clips, children love to collect and trade them. They are at low price points, so children can buy them with their allowance money.

WonderWorksShopkins
Choppiness; start at $4.99

Shopkins is the new hot trend amongst children this year and children are already trading, swapping, collecting, and playing with them. This will continue into the fall and winter season at all schools.

Also, totally worth checking out is the new Book Nook in the Mount Pleasant and West Ashley stores. This hands-on reading area will put thousands of books into the hands of Charleston children. This is a perfect way to cross those books off their reading lists.

Crescent Moon Children

I am all about a monogram. We embrace monograms in the Lowcountry. Crescent Moon Children keeps the Southern tradition alive offering traditional hand-smocked clothing for boys and girls. Monogramming is always an option.

Shrimp and Grits Kids

I am a sucker for smocking and this local business owned by one of my brother’s childhood friends (Pitts Hewitt) and his wife, Megan, is the ultimate way to get smocked items that are affordable. The other styles and designs are unique and fun.

S&GKidsIce Princess
Ice Princess Bishop- 6 months- 8; $45

We all just want to “let it go” sometimes. “Frozen” isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. My daughter remains obsessed. Embrace the craze with this adorable smocked dress.

S&GKidsFarm
Farm Bishop-  6 months- 8; $45
S&GKidsFarm 2
Farm longall- 6 months- 3T; $45

One of my favorites still: “Old McDonald had a farm.” Farm stories, songs and games have been popular since the beginning of time.

Southern Belles

This gem of a store probably has the most options for baby up to tween.

SouthernBellesNatives
Native shoes – Size 5-3 $38.00-$45.00

I see Natives everywhere on kids of all ages. They are machine washable, breathable, odor resistant and shock absorbent. My daughter loves to wear hers in the boat and on the beach.

SouthernBellesTsukihoshiFor a more athletic shoe for school, the Tsukihoshi brand for boys and girls is machine washable, super light and flexible with an antibacterial insole with green tea extract.

SouthernBellesBowsBows- Southern Belles has a “bow wall” where girls can pick out bows of all sizes and colors. I never leave Southern Belles without picking up an extra bow.

While Southern Belles doesn’t carry school uniforms, they do carry all of the basics like polos, short and long khaki and navy pants, white blouses, jumpers and skirts.  These are less stiff than regular school uniforms.
