If you want to travel “above and beyond” and learn more about aerospace travel and technology you will want to visit the new interactive flight exhibition at the Gaillard Center in downtown Charleston. As a former teacher, I was excited to visit the exhibit on opening day. It did not disappoint! Above and Beyond is a free exhibit designed to be the most interactive exhibition on aerospace to tour internationally. Following its premiere at Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, the tour will also include Dubai, St. Louis, Seattle, London, Tokyo and Chicago. The Gaillard Center will host the exhibit from February 13th to March 13th.
The exhibition celebrates aerospace technology and explores its future through interactive, hands-on activities. The exhibition’s 20 dynamic displays and immersive experiences focus on five themes, “Up, Faster, Higher, Farther and Smarter.”
The exhibit is is designed for visitors of all ages, but especially for ages 7 -14. The exhibit features a multitouch timeline, interactive simulations and design activities. Visitors will have the chance to equip and launch a drone, design and test-fly a supersonic jet and experience flight as a bird. Pretending to fly like a bird was the highlight of the exhibit for my toddler!
Above and Beyond creates an engaging and memorable experience filled with fun interactive design challenges, engaging media presentations and inspiring stories. It was inspiring to discover how aircraft and spacecraft has changed our lives and transformed our world. This free exhibit is the perfect opportunity for your child to participate in hands on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities while learning about aerospace and where the technology is headed in the future.

- The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is one of the best STEM resources for K – 12 students. The website is filled with reading material and simple experiments for all age groups to try at home.
- NASA Kids’ Club is a fun site for kids of any age to explore aerospace through games and videos.
- NASA Kids’ Corner inspires kids to learn more about aerospace technology with a Flight Simulator Word Search, poems and drawings about flight technology, a Wright Flyer Glider Project and a comic book about the history of flight.
- Science Buddies teaches kids about science careers and provides project ideas to help them decide if they are interested in a particular field of study.
