10 Reasons It’s Great to Call Charleston Home!

10 ReasonsOver the years, Charleston has been on the top of many prestigious lists. Every day, people from all over the world are vacationing or moving to the Holy City. Who can blame them? Charleston has so much to offer!

Here are my top ten reasons why living in Charleston is so great!

1. The People

Most people I’ve come across are friendlier and more welcoming than they are up North. (I can say this since I spent 24 years in Philadelphia!) When I moved here, it took me a while to get used to being greeted with a smiling face and a wave while passing a stranger on the street. Southern hospitality is a breath of fresh air!

2. The Weather

It’s beautiful here! It can still get rather cold in the winter, but it very rarely snows here in the Lowcountry. Although there is always a risk of hurricanes, a majority of the time the sun is shining which provides perfect weather for #3 on our list . . .

3. Beaches

We have gorgeous beaches here in Charleston! Whether Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, or Folly Beach is your preference, you can guarantee a day of fun in the sand and water!

4. History

Did you know the first shots of the Civil War were fired right here in the Holy City? Charleston is full of so much history! Stroll along the Battery, visit Fort Sumter or one of our many beautiful Plantations, take a carriage ride downtown, or spend a day wandering around the Charleston Museum. There are so many opportunities to learn about our amazing city.

5. Food

Charleston is home to some of the best restaurants and award-winning chefs in the country! The food here is amazing. Some local favorites are shrimp and grits, pralines, bbq, and pimento cheese. Is your mouth watering yet?

6. Celebrities

Many celebrities call Charleston home, or their home away from home. Bill Murray can often be spotted around town. (Fun story: he sat next to my husband and me in church years ago. It was crowded and we were so close our elbows were touching!) Darius Rucker is a Charleston native, as is Stephen Colbert.

Charleston has also been the backdrop for many movies and tv shows: the Notebook, the Patriot, Dear John, Army Wives, Southern Charm, and The Righteous Gemstones. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were married at Boone Hall Plantation in 2012.

Keep your eyes peeled while you’re out around town. You never know what celebs you may bump into!

7. Shopping

King Street is a shopper’s paradise! With high-end stores and small local boutiques, there is truly something for everyone’s taste and budget. There is also Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant, Northwoods Mall and the Tanger Outlet Center in North Charleston, Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island, and the Citadel Mall in West Ashley.

8. Fun in the Outdoors

There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from in Charleston. Whether you enjoy water sports, shopping at a farmers market, golfing, walking the Ravenel Bridge, or visiting one of the many beautiful parks, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

9. Festivals and Events

It’s rare to come across a weekend that doesn’t include some kind of event or festival. Some favorites are the Spoleto Festival, the Oyster Festival, Charleston Fashion Week, the Food and Wine Festival, the Holiday Festival of Lights, and the Family Circle Cup Tennis Tournament.

10. Kid/Family Friendly

Charleston is fun for all ages and has many family-friendly activities and events! Check out a Riverdogs or Charleston Battery game, the South Carolina Aquarium, or the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry.

These are just a few of the many reasons we’re so lucky to live here in Charleston. What would you add to the list?
