Exploring Charleston {Johns Island}

1

I first fell in love with Johns Island as I drove down Maybank Highway towards the island at sunset. It is breathtaking to watch the sun glisten off the Stono River. We decided to purchase our first home on Johns Island two years ago and have continued loving the charm and natural beauty of the island.

Here are a few of our favorite places we enjoy near, or on Johns Island-

 Freshfields/Kiawah/Seabrook Island redsicehouse

One of the biggest perks of living on Johns Island is the close proximately to Kiawah. Kiawah has beautiful beaches, golf courses and restaurants. Sometimes when we don’t want to head downtown or to Mt. Pleasant for dinner, we go to Freshfields. You feel like you stepped back in time with the cute and charming atmosphere. There is a grocery store, ice cream parlor, liquor store with wine tastings, coffee shops, many cute stores like Lilly Pullitzer and Carolina Girls, restaurants, bars and a beautiful green space. During the summer months there are family friendly concerts held weekly. We love to spend the day and evening shopping, eating and relaxing at Freshfields!

We also love the Bohicket Marina and Market on Seabrook Island. It is one of the best places to eat and watch the sunset! There are several places to eat here including Red’s Icehouse which delights with a casual dining experience, beautiful scenery and often a band playing on the deck. We usually enjoy a walk along the marina after dinner with ice cream.

 Angel Oak Tree angeloak

The Angel Oak Tree is a southern live oak located in Angel Oak Park on Johns Island. It is estimated to be more than 500 years old and is truly magnificent.

It is gorgeous and a wonderful way to experience and appreciate nature. The visit is free and there are plenty of picnic tables to have lunch. Every friend or family member we bring here is truly in awe of this beautiful tree!

Wild Olive Restaurant

Wild Olive can be easy to miss when driving down Maybank Highway, but it is well worth the find. We love this Italian restaurant. It is warm and inviting. The food and staff are terrific and we have never been disappointed. You should definitely make reservations in advance, as the seats fill up quickly.

Firefly Distillery firefly

I love Firefly sweet tea vodka, so visiting the distillery was a must when we moved to Charleston. We have been here many times since with family and friends. It is always a fun and interactive experience. It is very family friendly with picnic tables, food trucks, live entertainment and a petting zoo.

We look forward to exploring the beauty of Johns Island and adding to our “favorites” list.
