What You Need to Know: Congenital Heart Defects

0

Meet the Kerr Family – a family affected by congenital heart defects. Charles Anderson Kerr is a little boy, who now thrives, but whose life began with a congenital heart defect.

Did you know, congenital heart defects affects 8 children for every 1000 births in the United States?

A congenital heart defect is one that exists at birth and occurs when the heart or blood vessels near the heart don’t develop normally before birth. There are many different common types of heart defects. Defects range in severity from simple problems, such as “holes” between chambers of the heart, to severe malformations, such as complete absence of one or more of the chambers or valves in the heart.

Successful treatment for congenital heart defects requires specialized care. This presents both an enormous emotional and financial burden on families of children born with congenital heart defects. To learn more about congenital heart defects visit the AHA website.

The American Heart Association provides resources for education and research on congenital heart defects and your support of activities like the AHA’s Heart Walk brings financial resources to the AHA.
