Keeping Our Kids Healthy

Did you know that 1 in 3 children (between the ages of 2 and 19) are overweight or obese in the United States? Very few children actually meet the healthy diet and physical activity recommendations. Obese and overweight children are far more likely to become obese and overweight adults. It is best to start instilling healthy behaviors in our children now!

The American Heart Association recommends a combination of increased physical activity and healthy eating.  So how can you build in healthy behaviors into your family’s lifestyle and your household? Start with these 4 steps.

Step 1: Physical Activity at home – What better way to check some chores off the household list and your kids moving.

Step 2: Good nutrition starts at home. Incorporate healthy foods (under $1 per serving) into your diet.

    Step 3: Reduce screen time

    Step 4: More sleep – The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends: 4 months – 12 months (12 to 16 hours/day); 1 year – 2 years (11 to 14 hours/day); 3 years – 5 years (10 to 13 hours/day); 6 years – 12 years (9 to 12 hours/day); 13 years – 18 years (8 to 10 hours/day). Remember these times are averages and include naps!

And most importantly, if you have healthier behaviors – these can be easily passed on to your children. Busy parents and caregivers must care for themselves as well.
