Welcome to week 4 of the Family Health Challenge. This week we will focus on everyone’s favorite: SUGAR!

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends cutting back on added sugars. Are you wondering whether you need to do this for your children? The answer is likely yes. Sugar is found in so many places and not just the obvious places like sweets and snacks.

Like we discussed in last weeks challenge, it is important to pay attention to nutritional labels on foods. Recent updates to nutritional labels will highlight sugar content including specific information on the amount of added sugars in a product. Reading nutritional labels is a great first step. If you take the concepts from the week 1 challenge, by increasing vegetables and fresh fruits we are reducing the likelihood of added sugars. Fresh fruits do contain sugars so it is also important to monitor the quantity that is consumed. Serving size recommendations for fresh fruits and vegetables can be found on the AHA’s website.

The AHA provides recommendations for swapping sugars in a variety of different foods.

How will you reduce the added sugars in your pantry and kitchen?

This concludes are 4 week family health challenge, but do not let the road to health end here. Healthy diets and exercise are crucial to living a healthy lifestyle.

What better way to show your children the benefits of exercise, than by joining Charleston Moms Blog this Saturday at the Lowcountry Heart Walk in Charleston. Donations are still being accepted here.
