2017 Moms Guide to Summer Races

Any runners out there? This one’s for you! I’ve rounded up Charleston’s many summer races and pulled them all into this post. So if you’re crazy enough to keep on running and racing through the soupy summer heat and humidity (I know I am!), here are some events you may want to add to your calendar. Just click on the tabs below to find a complete listing of all the summer races in the area for the next several months.

Moms’ Run 

Saturday, May 13, 8:00 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Come out for a race, plus a day of family fun at the 14th annual Moms’ Run fundraiser for Postpartum Support Charleston. Kids and strollers welcome.

Green & Lean

Saturday, May 13, 8:30 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Start and end in Brittlebank Park and loop around a shaded route in Hampton Park. There’s a silent auction that benefits Keep Charleston Beautiful and a kids race. Strollers and leashed dogs welcome in the race.

11th Annual Hazel Williams Gammons Run for Your Mother 5k

Saturday, May 13, 8:30 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Summerville’s Mother’s Day race in memory of Hazel Williams who passed away of a stroke.

Insane Inflatable 5K

Saturday, May 20, Wave starts every 30 minutes from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Make your way through giant inflatable obstacles in this untimed fun run.

Saturday, May 27, 4:00 p.m.

Distance: 5K
Start in front of the Joe stadium and finish at home plate, then enjoy a Riverdogs baseball game.

Floppin’ Flounder

Saturday, June 3, 8:30 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Race through the scenic neighborhoods of Sullivan’s Island in this event benefiting the Charleston Running Club and the Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue Department.

The Big Run

Wednesday, June 7, 7:00 p.m.

Distance: 5K
This race is held by local Fleet Feet stores and will take place across the nation at the same time. All results will funnel up into the national scores to find out who’s the fastest runner in the country.

Hope for Haiti

Thursday, June 8, 7:00 p.m.

Distance: 5K trail run
This one offers a rare chance to run the normally closed-to-the-public trails at Oakland Plantation.

Run the Runway

Saturday, June 10, 8:00 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Run right on the runway at the Joint Base Charleston Air Base. (Tip: Bring your sunscreen. There’s no shade!)

Firecracker 4 Miler

Tuesday, July 4, 8:30 a.m.

Distance: 4 mile trail run
Kick off the 4th with a 4-mile race on the shaded trails at Laurel Hill County Park.

I’On Club Firecracker 5K

Tuesday, July 4, 7:30 a.m.

Distance: 5K
Race through the I’On community in Mount Pleasant. There’s a special race on a 1.5 mile modified course for people with permanent physical conditions or disabilities that affect their ability to walk/run.

Isle of Palms Beach Run

Saturday, July 15, 8:00 a.m. (Kids runs start at 9:00 a.m.)

Distance: 5K, 10K, Kids Fun Runs
Sun, sand, surf…and a race. This race takes place right on the beach on Isle of Palms and has lots of family-friendly kids race distance options (1 mile, 1/2 mile, and 100 yard).

Race for the ARK

Saturday, August 26, 7:45 a.m.

Distance: 5K and 1 mile
One of the few races in Summerville. Come out and support the ARK, which offers support to Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

The Dirt Dash

Saturday, August 26, 7:30 a.m.

Distance: 5K, 10K, 13.1, 26.2 trail runs
This one has a new location and new distances this year! It’s still a trail race, but after seven years in the Francis Marion Forest, it’s relocating to Middleton Place Woodlands.

Race through the beautiful Lowcountry scenery on Seabrook Island. The after party takes place on the boardwalk at Bohicket Marina.

Red Ribbon 5K and AIDS walk

Saturday, September 16, 10:00 a.m.

Distance: 5K run and walk
Run or walk in this fundraiser for Roper St. Francis Ryan White Wellness Center and Lowcountry AIDS Services. Post-race party with food and music.

South Carolina Aquarium Turtle Trek Sunset Beach Run

Saturday, September 23, 6:30 p.m.

Distance: 5K and kids fun run
Race for the turtles, join the beach sweep/clean up pre-race, enjoy a sunset run on Isle of Palms beach, and celebrate at the after party at the Windjammer.
