For as long as I can remember, books have been very special to me. As a child, I loved to flip through the Scholastic catalog carefully choosing a new book. Nothing makes me happier than reading a good book on an awesome beach day. Sadly, it’s becoming more difficult to find that “me” time to enjoy a good book with a toddler and family responsibilities.
So, when my friend suggested we start a Book Club, I thought it was a great idea! In the past few years, our Book Club has evolved into more than just a Book Club. This group of old and new friends has become a great group of girlfriends and we have celebrated engagements, marriages, several babies, new homes and shared some difficult times together. We meet once a month to enjoy dinner, wine, chat about life and eventually get to discussing our current book.
Here’s how it works: Every month we meet at someone’s house. The host provides dinner and everyone else brings a bottle of wine or dessert. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where yoga pants and a big glass of wine are encouraged. After we catch up and share a delicious dinner and dessert, we chat about the book. Often, only a few girls have had time to read the book. That’s okay! Book Club is really about time for us to get together and enjoy each others’ company. Next, we suggest a book for the upcoming month. Sometimes we agree on one choice or if we have several suggestions we will vote on one. We choose a variety of genres and authors to keep things interesting and everyone happy!
Here are a few books we have read and enjoyed:
- A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall
- Saving Grace by Jane Green
- Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
- The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd (This book is set in Charleston and based on a true story – a must read!)
- Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll
- The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
- The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
- The Dinner by Herman Koch
- The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
- Bossypants by Tina Fey
- Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
- What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
- The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
- The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (one of my top favorites books!)
Happy Reading!
Lauren! I thought your last blog post about being an international child was my favorite, but this is definitely my new favorite! Maybe because I’m in it, wink. Book club is something I look forward to every month, and I’m so thankful for you and all the girls in it. Love you!
