October is National Book Month!

Do you have a favorite hobby? Well, one of mine is reading. I was super excited to learn that October is National Book Month! For me, reading fiction is a chance to escape reality and dig into my character’s role. I believe it’s better than reality TV. I know, I’m getting crazy now! Of course, I love reading non-fiction as well and learning about all types of topics.

Since becoming a mom I have loved reading to my children. It is a daily activity for us and they too have become lovers of books!

There are many benefits to reading and here are just a few of them:

  • It keeps your brain mentally stimulated. Your brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy and reading does just that.
  • Reading can be a stress reducer. When you let yourself slip away in a great story, it can help you relax.
  • You gain knowledge every time you fill your head with information. Who can argue with that?!
  • It increases your vocabulary. The more words you expose yourself to; the more articulate you will be.
  • Did you know that every new memory you create (from remembering characters, plots etc.) helps forge new synapses and strengthens your old ones? Overall, this helps your short-term memory!
  • Reading helps you develop stronger analytical thinking skills!
  • My favorite reason: it’s entertaining!

With all these awesome reasons that reading is good for you; don’t you want to pass these on to your own children? Me too!

October Book Month

Yes, there are many amazing children’s books, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Honestly, your children will love most anything you read to them. It’s the whole process of sitting together snuggled with a book that they love.

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
  • Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney
  • The Belly Button Book by Sandra Boynton
