Having a baby is an exciting event that comes along with a mix of emotions such as anxiety and nervousness. I’m expecting baby #2 any day now, and although I’ve given birth before I know that every experience is different. For me, planning ahead and having an idea of what to expect have been key to my peace of mind.

b07a9404I was so excited for my tour of Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital Women’s Unit! Lori, my tour guide, was so knowledgeable about the ins and outs of labor and delivery. She answered all of my questions and eased any concerns I had.

We broadcast the tour live on the CMB Facebook page

Our tour began in a birthing suite, a large and private room furnished with a birthing bed, rocking chair, TV, sleeper chair for dad, and a private bathroom. What stood out to me about the room was how home-like it felt and not sterile or stuffy like you would expect in a hospital room. In one suite at Mount Pleasant Hospital, a labor tub is available upon request for moms who wish to have a more natural approach to pain control.

Lori explained to us that in 2013, Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital became the second hospital in South Carolina to earn the designation of Baby Friendly. For this reason, Mount Pleasant Hospital encourages rooming in with your baby in order to promote bonding. All tests or screening are done in the room with mom. Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital also encourages breastfeeding and a full-time lactation consultant is on call seven days a week to help moms and babies get off on the right foot. Many of the nurses are certified lactation counselors and all nurses have received extensive training in lactation. This helps arm moms with the tools and resources needed to continue breastfeeding at home. Breastfeeding support groups are also available for moms who want some extra support.

Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant HospitalWe ended our tour in a postpartum room which included a bed, sleeper chair, private bathroom, recliner, and even a sound machine for baby. In the postpartum room, mom and baby will continue to be watched and monitored for at least 24 hours before going home. I left the tour feeling confident and prepared for my labor and delivery experience.
