Mama’s Little Luxuries {Coffee in the Charleston Area}

1

Screen Shot 2015-08-02 at 11.01.30 PMEach morning, I begin my day with a 4 year old finger poking me in the eye. “It’s time to go downstairs, Mama!” Apparently one small ray of light made its way through the blinds which signaled Mr. Sunshine to throw back his Spiderman comforter and take on the day…. I peel myself from the bed and depending on the day, I  stumble down to my daughter’s bedroom. The alarm usually hasn’t even gone off yet. Bella, my six year old, isn’t a morning person at all. I know I certainly never have been. I spend half my morning routine with one eye still shut. Mr. Sunshine always jumps on the bed and shouts to us both, “Come on! I’m hungry!”

    Breakfast and 47 other things happen at the same time in the 20 minute rush we have before we make it to wherever we have to be that morning. I will undoubtedly forget to put the dog in her crate and from the way her tail is tucked between her legs when I return, I will know she has personally crafted me a welcome home present. The Husband is off to work and my email inbox is already full.
     I will forget to fill out someone’s permission slip… gotta do that in the drop off line (when it’s stopped, of course.) Mr. Sunshine will be crying because we forgot to bring Spiderman in the car… The weekends and summer are a little different but I’m still the daily juggler in this circus of expectations.
      It’s hectic, it’s exhausting and sometimes I just need a little something for me. This is where my coffee comes in. You see, coffee is my reason to stop for a few minutes and take a deep breath on the porch. It’s the little gift I give myself when I’d much rather listen to Pearl Jam but Kidzbop owns my car stereo. It’s the little cup in my Target shopping cart that says “You are still a person who deserves love” when I put back the cute, clearance t-shirt I grabbed for myself and replace it with yet another 4 pack of Playdoh. It’s a reason to chat with other human adults in a place without an indoor playground and honestly, sometimes it feels good to have something just for me…Something my kids would find disgusting (they are total scavengers) and Lord knows Mr. Sunshine does NOT need a pick me up. Coffee is my little luxury.
     I have many favorite spots and I honestly love many types of coffee and espresso drinks. I do make a lot of coffee at home and frequent Starbucks but I like to sip local when I can. We have so many great options in the area. Here are just a few of my favorites and the favorites of a few of our other contributors.
Joey Bag a Donuts   (Mount Pleasant)
Everything about this place is fantastic. Amazing donuts, superb breakfast sandwiches and beverages. My favorite here is the Toasted Marshmallow coffee.
Single Smile Cafe  (Summerville)
I am in love with historic Summerville and this place is a gem. I love to go there and write. The coffee and expresso are top notch. I also love the local atmosphere and the food is great. I highly recommend stopping in.
Coastal Coffee Roasters  (Summerville)
Amazing, micro roasted specialty coffee and culinary creations in Downtown Summerville! This charming joint celebrates local ingredients and even has craft beer and wine selections!
Metto Coffee & Tea   (Mount Pleasant)
This one is a contributor favorite! Enjoy speciality coffee, made from scratch pastries and paninis and a family friendly atmosphere! One of our contributors loves to take her little ones there for smoothies!
Enjoy Counter Culture Coffee and 22 beers on tap. You can also relax with a great selection of bottled ciders and wine, if you like.  Culinary creations are also offered by local bakeries.
Biggby Coffee    (Summerville, Goose Creek, North Charleston)
This one is a chain but I have frequented this drive thru many times! I particularly love the Caramel Marvel.

Do you drink coffee? If not, what’s your little luxury?
