Welcome to August! Summer is winding down and school is just around the corner, but there are still plenty of fun, family-friendly events going on around the area!

Wednesday, August 1

Summer Entertainment Series: Wo’Se of Charleston

The Summer Entertainment Series is designed to give kids a fun-filled opportunity to visit our parks and enjoy some great entertainment. This week, we’ll take a trip to West Africa with stories, songs, and drumming. Come learn about the true Africa, as Queen Atterberry shares her experience of living in traditional and modern African culture.

Concerts in the Courtyard & Art

Wednesday afternoons we invite you to gather with us for live music, Hege’s happy hour specials and giveaways in the Freshfield’s Village Courtyard, located outside the main entrance to the Timbers Kiawah Sales Gallery.

James Island County Park’s Reggae Concert Series 

Bring your picnic blankets or chairs and enjoy music from Mystic Vibrations. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Concerts will take place rain or shine!

GULLAH/GEECHEE NATION INTERNATIONAL MUSIC & MOVEMENT FESTIVAL™ 2018

The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ is the official celebration of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. This three day celebration hosted and presented by native Gullah/Geechees will link the connection from the Sea Islands to Barbados through music, dance, drama, film, books, and crafts.

Wee Wild Ones: Curious Clams

Young children ages 1-5 will channel their inner explorers while enjoying nature through hands-on activities, games, music, and art. Discover hidden clams and other creatures in the sand using supplied shovels and strainers. Ages 1-5.  Chaperones are required to attend, but not required to register.

Couple’s Challenge Course

Enjoy an afternoon with your sweetheart by taking your relationship to new heights on James Island County Park’s High Course! Face obstacles together, walk across a suspended cable at heights, help each other over obstacles, and enjoy racing down our 200 ft. zip line. Ages 16 & up. Minimum enrollment required Monday prior to program. Preregistration is highly recommended and will be available up until midnight Thursday prior to the program. On the day of the program, admission can be purchased on-site at day-of rate for $30, space permitting.

Tuesday, August 7

Animal Forest Tuesday at Charles Towne Landing 

Bring your toddlers to watch the animals and stay for a story and a walk out to the habitat. Recommended ages is 2-4.

Thursday, August 9

Kayak Interpretive Program: Interpreting Tea Farm Creek

Join us for guided exploration of ecosystems along the South Carolina coastal plain. We’ll paddle by one of the only naturalized understory of tea plants in the country and through abandoned rice fields, now turned back into salt marshes, to witness firsthand how human history has impacted the landscapes around us. You’ll paddle alongside a trained naturalist who will help you read the landscape of these special areas with opportunities to see local wildlife.

Family Focused Tours with Historic Charleston Foundation

Come enjoy our Family focused Tours and activities at the Nathaniel Russell House, 51 Meeting Street every Tuesday June 12-Aug 7 and at the Aiken-Rhett House, 48 Elizabeth Street, every Thursday June 14-Aug 9. Tours on the half-hour beginning at 10:30 and last one offered at 12:30. Adults $12, kids 6-16 years $5, under 6 is free. Docent led scavenger hunt tours, historic game sand toys in the gardens follow the tours.

Saturday, August 11

Wannamaker Movie Night

Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket, and join us for a movie night under the stars at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park. Movie nights are FREE with regular park admission. Movies begin just after sunset. Movie titles to be announced.

Hootie and the Blowfish

South Carolina’s own Hootie and the Blowfish will be performing at Volvo Car Stadium.

First Day Festival

Every August, Charleston holds a festival where students and their families receive school supplies, learn about student support services and healthy snacks, and enjoy festival entertainment.

Sunday, August 12

2nd Sunday on King Street

Shop, dine, and walk along King Street, which is closed off to traffic, on the 2nd Sunday of each month! Print this voucher to receive two hours of free parking!

Wednesday, August 15

Awendaw Green Barn Jam

Head out to Awendaw Green for a weekly barn jam, featuring a variety of quality music from local and visiting musicians. The event is BYOB and food will be available for purchase from Wood Fired Pizza and the Roost Bar N’ Grille. Pets on a leash are welcome, along with guests of all ages. If you arrive early you may even get a chance to play some disc golf at Sewee Outpost. Every Wednesday night at 6. Admission: $5

Third Thursdays in Summerville

On the third Thursday of each month, downtown Summerville becomes a prime spot for live entertainment, special offers from restaurants, shopping, and local music.

Grape Stomping Festival

It’s here! The 2018 Stomp Festival is going to be bigger and better than ever. We will have some exciting new releases and amazing food and music for you to enjoy, as well as our wine stomping and annual Lucille Ball look-a-like contest! Fun for the entire family and the family dog too! Join us for music, food, vendors, jump castles, face-painting… you know, the whole 9. Charleston Jam on the Water Concert Series

Join Charleston Harbor Tours, Sweetwater Brewing Company and Follywood Productions for an amazing music and brews cruise series. We will set sail aboard the Carolina Queen for an entertaining, 2 hour cruise featuring some great local bands, local arts vendors and a great time on Charleston Harbor with amazing views! You don’t want to miss this series. It will make the perfect beginning to your weekend!

Charleston Battery-BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT + FIREWORKS

Celebrate the most wonderful time of year for parents and the most dreaded time of year for kids. It’s time to go back to school! Bring the whole family out to celebrate the end of summer with the Battery. We’re offering 4 tickets for $40; additional tickets are $10.  We’ll be giving away Charleston Battery keychains to the first 500 kids through the gates. Plus we’ll have drink specials for adults and post game FIREWORKS on the field with the team!

Annual Thrivent Financial Race for the Ark

This 5k run/walk and 1 mile fun run raises funds for The Ark to provide comprehensive services to families living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia.

CHARLESTON MUSIC CONFAB

Charleston Music Confab is a multi-genre music conference founded in 2015. In its first three years, Confab brought hundreds of artists, students, and music lovers together with music industry professionals from around the country: managers, agents, radio and digital programmers, record label executives, promoters, sound and video producers, social media pros and more. The conference offered attendees the opportunity to network and learn from each other, in an amazing city – Charleston, SC (recently named the country’s #1 Travel Destination by readers of Travel + Leisure Magazine for the fourth straight year)!
