Welcome to January! This month we are looking forward to starting off the new year with so many fun, family-friendly events going on around Charleston! From a Polar Plunge to Restaurant Week, Jazz Festival, and the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, there is something for everyone!

Monday, January 1

Amazing Holiday Train Display at Belmond Charleston Place

Open from November 29, 2017 through January 2, 2018, and located in the heart of the historic district, Belmond Charleston Place brings the magic and sophistication of the city into the grand lobby with a beautiful display of Christmas trees  The highlight of the festive decorations is a miniature replica of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train nestled under the hotel’s signature Georgian open arm staircase.

Monday, January 1

Bill Murray Look-a-Like Polar Plunge

Dress as your favorite Bill Murray character on New Years Day and take the plunge into the cold ocean water on Folly Beach.  Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes prior to the plunge. Several local restaurants and bars will have cocktail specials and a portion of the proceeds of the event will benefit Folly Beach local charities.

Time: Registration starts at 11 am, plunge will take place at 1 pm

Monday, January 1

1st Day 5k

Start your New Year’s resolution out on the right foot – and left foot – as you take part in the first Race the Landing 5K of 2018.

Address: Meeting place is the parking lot at Charles Towne Landing Historic Site

Tuesday, January 2

Animal Forest Toddler Tuesday at Charles Towne Landing

Bring your toddler to the Animal Forest at Charles Towne Landing for “Toddler Time” and watch their eyes light up when they see the animals! You’ll read a story, talk about animals, and then take a walk to a habitat to actually see what we talked about. This program is designed for ages 2-4.

Wednesday, January 3

Awendaw Green Barn Jam

Head out to Awendaw Green for a weekly barn jam, featuring a variety of quality music from local and visiting musicians. The event is BYOB and food will be available for purchase from Wood Fired Pizza and the Roost Bar N’ Grille.

Friday, January 5

Art Walk

Located along Historic Broad Street, Gallery Row opens its doors for “First Fridays on Broad” and a variety of other events hosted by the 15 galleries, restaurants, shops, and boutiques on the Row.

Sunday, January 7

Easy Like Sunday Morning at Wild Blue Ropes

Sunday mornings just got a little easier! Enjoy $10 off when you book a Challenge Pass adventure starting at 10 am thru 12 pm on Sundays.

Saturday, January 13

Charleston Marathon

Complete 26.2 miles while taking in the beautiful sights of downtown Charleston and ending in North Charleston.  Stay for the live entertainment after the race and receive free shrimp and grits and beer (over 21).

Charleston Restaurant Week

Get a taste of all the delicious food that Charleston has to offer by enjoying one of the city’s most popular events…Restaurant Week! Many restaurants from around the Charleston area will offer a prix fixe lunch and dinner menu. Check out the website for a full list of participating restaurants.

Sunday, January 14

2nd Sunday on King Street

Shop, dine, and walk along King Street, which is closed off to traffic, on the 2nd Sunday of each month! Print this voucher to receive two hours of free parking!

Thursday, January 18 – Sunday, January 21

Charleston Jazz Festival

The 4th annual Jazz Festival is a can’t-miss event! This three-day event features some of the area’s top Jazz bands! This year’s roster will also feature Kenny G and Nnenna Freelon,

Thursday, January 18

Gershwin and Bernstein Take New York!

George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein captured New York City’s essence and became the iconic musical voices of their time. The CSO is joining orchestras around the world to celebrate Bernstein’s Centennial this season. They will then join forces with College of Charleston piano professor, Paul Sánchez, to perform Gershwin’s popular jazz classic, Rhapsody in Blue.

Thursday, January 18

Third Thursdays in Summerville

On the Third Thursday of each month, the historic downtown Summerville district throws a party. Hutchinson Square, the park in the center of downtown, becomes an entertainment venue. The pedestrian mall area called Short Central hosts booths and musical entertainment. Local musicians are featured at several locations throughout the downtown.

Taste of Folly

This two-day celebration of Folly food includes local restaurants selling food and drinks on the street, local vendors, live music, and a children’s area.

Weekend Wine-Down, Deep Water Vineyard

Every Saturday Deep Water Vineyard, Charleston’s only vineyard, hosts this fun Weekend Wine-Down where there’s a live musical guest, food available (amazing food truck normally) and their fantastic selection of wines.

Toddler Day: Kitchen Art

Toddler days at The Charleston Museum are designed for children ages 18 months-3 years. Your child will get to have fun with food and create crafts using utensils.

39th Annual Charleston Boat Show

This annual happening includes everything from powerboats to small jon boats, skiffs, cruisers, yachts and ski boats. There is something for everyone’s taste and budget.

7th Annual Charleston Food Truck Festival

Food lovers unite! The 7th annual Charleston Food Truck Festival is the largest of it’s kind in the Southeast so there’s sure to be tasty bites for everyone! There will also be live music and local beers to enjoy.

35th Lowcountry Oyster Festival

The Lowcountry Oyster Festival is the world’s largest oyster festival with 80,000 pounds of oysters! There will be oyster shucking and eating contests, live music, a children’s area, and a “food court” showcasing a variety of local restaurants.

Cost: General admission ticket is $17.50 in advance online, $25 the day of. VIP is $125 through January 27th, $150 the day of.

Wednesday, January 31

Toddler Day: Pajama Day

Wear your pajamas, have milk and cookies, and paint a pillow case! Toddler Day classes are designed for toddlers (18 months – 3 years) and a parent, grandparent, or friend to play and explore in The Charleston Museum. Each program includes four craft projects as well as finger paints, a puppet stage, a sandbox, and more.

Cost: $6 for Museum members, $9 for Non-members. Price includes Museum admittance and the Toddler Day program for one child and one adult.
