Mom’s Guide To January: Family Events In Charleston


Welcome to January! This month we are looking forward to starting off the new year with so many fun, family-friendly events going on around Charleston! From a Polar Plunge to Restaurant Week, Jazz Festival, and the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, there is something for everyone! Sunday, January 1

Children’s Garden Christmas & Kids Walk

Drive through the Edisto Memorial Gardens holiday light display featuring one-half mile of both still and animated light displays and trees.  There is also an interactive kids walk featuring a variety of light displays.

Bill Murray Look-a-Like Polar Plunge

Dress as your favorite Bill Murray character on New Years Day and take the plunge into the cold ocean water on Folly Beach.  Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes prior to the plunge. Several local restaurants and bars will have cocktail specials and a portion of the proceeds of the event will benefit Folly Beach local charities.

Time: Registration starts at 11 am, plunge will take place at 1 pm

Wednesday, January 4 – Sunday, January 22

Charleston Restaurant Week

Get a taste of all the delicious food that Charleston has to offer by enjoying one of the city’s most popular events…Restaurant Week! Many restaurants from around the Charleston area will offer a prix fixe lunch and dinner menu. Check out the website for a full list of participating restaurants.

Sunday, January 8

2nd Sunday on King Street

Shop, dine, and walk along King Street, which is closed off to traffic, on the 2nd Sunday of each month! Print this voucher to receive two hours of free parking!

Friday, January 13 – Saturday, January 14

Monster Jam

If trucks are your thing, then you won’t want to miss out on Monster Jam featuring the Carolina Crusher.  This family-friendly event is sure to entertain! Make sure to check out the event’s dress code.

Time: Gates open at 6 pm

Saturday, January 14

Southern Fried Chicken Challenge

Check out this inaugural event featuring twenty local vendors competing to make the tastiest fried chicken in the area! You can also sample delicious food and shop local vendors while listening to music from around the area.

Address: The Grove at Patriot’s Point, 40 Patriot’s Point Blvd., Mount Pleasant, SC
Time: 1 pm-6 pm
Cost: Advance tickets, general admission tickets are $20 (VIP $75), Day of, general admission tickets are $25 (VIP $85). Tasting tickets are $2 each.

Saturday, January 14

Charleston Marathon

Complete 26.2 miles while taking in the beautiful sights of downtown Charleston and ending in North Charleston.  Stay for the live entertainment after the race and receive free shrimp and grits and beer (over 21).

Friday, January 20 – Sunday, January 22

Charleston Jazz Festival

The 3rd annual Jazz Festival is a can’t-miss event! This three-day event features some of the area’s top Jazz bands as well as 20-time Grammy award winners, The Manhattan Transfer and Take 6. Proceeds from the festival support Charleston’s Youth Jazz Programs.

James and the Giant Peach

The children’s classic is going on stage at the Dock Street Theater. A musical adaption that is sure to be enjoyable for the entire family!

Taste of Folly

This two-day celebration of Folly food includes local restaurants selling food and drinks on the street, local vendors, live music, and a children’s area.

Wild Kratts

The popular PBS kids show is coming to the stage of the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Highly imaginative and entertaining, your children are sure to love it!

Wednesday, January 25

Toddler Day: Kitchen Art

Toddler days at The Charleston Museum are designed for children ages 18 months-3 years. Your child will get to have fun with food and create crafts using utensils.

Cost: $6 for museum members, $9 for non-members

Saturday, January 28

6th Annual Charleston Food Truck Festival

Food lovers unite! The 6th annual Charleston Food Truck Festival is the largest of it’s kind in the Southeast so there’s sure to be tasty bites for everyone! There will also be live music and local beers to enjoy.

Sunday, January 29

Lowcountry Oyster Festival

The Lowcountry Oyster Festival is the world’s largest oyster festival with 80,000 pounds of oysters! There will be oyster shucking and eating contests, live music, a children’s area, and a “food court” showcasing a variety of local restaurants.

Cost: General admission ticket is $17.50, VIP is $100
