Even the smallest of actions can seem like grand gestures to beloved grandparents. National Grandparents Day is here. My sweet babies are lucky to have all of their grandparents alive. They have a Mimi, a Poppa Steve, a Grandma Connie, a Mamama, and a Tatata. Grandparents can be the children’s biggest cheerleaders. They take interest in all their activities, they have more patience than I will ever have, and never say no “to one more book.” For these very reasons, it is the perfect day to show our appreciation and shower Grandparents with grand gestures.

Grand Gesture #1:
Join them in an activity they love and enjoy. Our Mimi loves completing puzzles. We plan on purchasing her a new 500 piece puzzle and then we will spend the day getting the puzzle started with her. Creating this love of a shared activity is great for all involved.
Grand Gesture #2:
Individualize the grand gesture. If Poppa’s favorite food is chocolate chip cookies, bake Poppa chocolate chip cookies and deliver to him in a wrapped package. If Granny’s love language is acts of service, water her flowers for her or mow her grass. We love to show how well we know our grandparents and do something special just for them.

Communication with Grandparents. If your grandparents don’t live close by, plan a phone call with them, mail a card with current photos, or coordinate the next trip to see them in person. Communication is key to keeping a close relationship and showing that you care on this special day, and every day.

Handmade gifts by the kids. When you combine effort, time, and personalization, this combination creates the most grand of gifts. Examples of handmade gifts can include making a scrapbook full of photos, creating a card, singing a song, cooking dinner, or a making a sweet necklace. Combining a child’s talent with a personalization of the gift increases the thoughtfulness.

Some grandparents don’t have loved ones in the area. Consider “adopting” a grandparent from a nursing home or in your neighborhood. Including others in your Grandparents Day plans will make the day even more special, knowing that everyone will have a connection. Did you know…the inspiration behind Grandparent’s Day was Mrs. Marian McQuade. She started a campaign in the early 1970s aimed at highlighting the elderly people in nursing homes and encouraging grandchildren to take advantage of the wisdom their grandparents could provide. This created the event known today.
