Soul Sisters!

Is there anything better than having a soul sister? I don’t think much can top it! My best friend is definitely more like a sister to me. Her mom watched me from the time I was six-weeks-old, and then two years later my friend was born.

Over the years we went through all the things sisters do. We played house, did Kathy Smith videos in the living room, got on each other’s nerves, saw each other through bad hair cuts, went to the mall, got through high school things, went to different colleges, etc. I moved away, but nothing could ever diminish the bond we had created. Having my daughter made it even stronger.

Soul Sisters! My daughter loves “Aunt Cae Cae,” and asks to FaceTime her on the regular. Cae Cae loves my daughter like her own, and is obviously her godparent. My daughter loves to send pictures to Cae Cae, talks about her pets all the time, and clearly thinks of her as someone who’s “in” her life, no matter the distance. I’m so glad because with us living states away, I always worried that my daughter wouldn’t really know my soul sister, and that would be so disappointing!

Cae Cae is such an important part of my life. Like regular sisters who are only two years apart, she and I won’t know anyone longer than we know each other. I love that because we grew up together, she and I know all the stories and history and have all the inside jokes.

She can make me laugh with the littlest things. One of my favorite examples is when we were out one day and she said something about someone putting on a visor before doing their hair. I realize out of context that it makes no sense, but that’s the whole point of a soul sister…it’s someone who understands you and can make you laugh, even when no one else knows what in the world you’re talking about!

We also always seem to be on the same wavelength. We share similar interests and lifestyles, and apparently shop at all the same online shops too (my daughter has duplicates of at least four toys because Cae Cae and I bought her the exact same thing!). They’re totally random things too. One of the items is from an Etsy shop with 212 versions of this one particular item, and we bought the exact same one!

I’ve been with my husband for nineteen years, so obviously he and my soul sister know each other well too, and that’s so wonderful too! They’re actually both engineers, so they have random technical things to talk about, and it’s cool that they don’t need me to carry on a conversation with one another.

I so hope that my daughter finds her own soul sister when she’s young. There’s just no replacement for that kind of unconditional friendship, although friendship is definitely an understatement here, she’s 100% family to us.

Stephanie is an only child, married to an only child, raising an only child! Stephanie and her husband (Brian) are Pittsburghers at heart, but made the move to Charleston in ’08 after moving around the country. Stephanie has a background in television, and has a (not so secret) dream to start a talk show and to publish books. She’s currently working on her first book and recently started a blog, called Speaking of Today (https://speakingoftoday.com), with her friend and fellow mom Dawn. Stephanie loves to spend every spare second with her daughter Kennedy. Kennedy was born 12 weeks early and spent the full 12 weeks in the hospital. Thankfully Kennedy is totally healthy, but the experience of being a preemie mom certainly changed Stephanie’s life! She looks forward to sharing stories of mommyhood with the Charleston Moms Blog readers.
