Kávé, Café, Kaffee, Let’s Celebrate…International Coffee Day Is Here!

As a momma, an educator, and an early riser, I enjoy a good cup of coffee. My 2 ½ year old son even recognizes the fact that I need coffee in the morning before anything else occurs, often saying, “momma, you need your coffee.”

My love of warm, hot coffee began as a track runner in high school. In Nebraska, track season began in March. March in Nebraska is cold, so to help keep us warm after running, we would buy a cup of hot coffee. Transition this love of hot coffee to becoming an educator. As a teacher, I would begin my day full of children, with a hot cup of coffee.

If anyone can appreciate an awareness event revolving around coffee, it is me! Beginning on Friday, September 29th through Sunday, October 1st 2017, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and dozens of other coffee associations from around the world gather together to celebrate the annual International Coffee Day.

International Coffee Day is a global celebration of coffee’s journey from the farm to your local coffee shop. This day is also an opportunity to honor and say “thank you” to the men and women who grow and harvest the coffee we enjoy.

Locally, you can celebrate International Coffee Day in many different ways. If you enjoy coffee as much as I do, I like to use this day to connect with other coffee drinkers and find ways to bring awareness to different kinds of coffee.

Ways to celebration International Coffee Day:

  • Host a coffee cupping in your home, office, or local coffee shop.
  • Run a promotion or discount offer in your coffee shop (shop owners).
  • Make a video or post a picture about your love for coffee to upload to social media using the hashtag #InternationalCoffeeDay .

Every day, more than half of the adult population drinks coffee. In the immediate Charleston area, there are over 20 independent coffee shops with every major fast food restaurant now serving coffee. On this day, many businesses offer free or discounted cups of coffee, so be on the lookout for these promotions. Even greeting card companies sell National Coffee Day greeting cards, as well as free e-cards. As a fellow coffee lover,  I hope to see you out celebrating this very special day.
